Mission
Our Mission
It is the primary mission of WisItalia to encourage the teaching of Italian and
the culture of Italy in the primary, secondary, post secondary colleges and
universities of Wisconsin. It is also to educate the general public in the
Italian language and culture. Our History
WisItalia, a non-profit (501c.3) organization, was created in December of the
year 2000 to promote the teaching of Italian language classes in the elementary
and secondary schools in Wisconsin.
In its three years of existence, we have been successful with
these projects in the State of Wisconsin:
- two classes at Rufus King Baccalaureate High School in
Milwaukee;
- one class at Edgerton High School;
- the creation of the School of Italian in Kenosha;
- the continuation of two classes at Spring Harbor Middle
School, and the creation of four after-school Community Learning Center
classes in Madison;
- classes starting in the fall of 2003 at Bradford High
School and Tremper High School in Kenosha.
- classes at LaFollette High School in Madison;
- classes at St.Norbert College in Green Bay;
- classes starting in the summer of 2004 at Brookfield
Academy;
- classes starting in the fall of 2004 at UW-Parkside.
WisItalia is comprised of the Italian-American Clubs in
Milwaukee, Madison, Racine, Kenosha, Green Bay and Wausau, and the Italian
Language Departments at U.W.- Madison and U.W.-Milwaukee. U.W.-Eau Claire has
also indicated a desire to join the group.
The specific objectives of the organization are:
- To coordinate the development and implementation of Italian
language classes in Wisconsin's public and private elementary and secondary
schools;
- To coordinate and develop private classes for children and
adults;
- To identify and compile a list of qualified teachers of
Italian, and to direct them to employment opportunities in schools or
private classes;
- To acquire and distribute fiscal and other resources to new
and existing Italian language classes;
- To preserve and protect the heritage of Italian-Americans,
and to promote positive, friendly relationships with educational and
cultural groups in Italy.
